West Bengal, Oct 07 (V7N) — West Bengal is witnessing unprecedented protests ahead of the Durga Puja celebrations, as multiple incidents of rape and murder have left the state in shock. In the span of two months, the tragic events, including the rape and murder of a minor by a doctor, have cast a pall over the normally joyous festival season.

One of the most horrifying incidents occurred on August 9, when a doctor at RGKOR Medical College Hospital in Kolkata was raped and murdered, sparking outrage across the state. This incident, along with the brutal rape and murder of a class IV student in Jayanagar, South 24 Parganas, on October 5, has intensified the protests, creating a tense atmosphere in the region.

Despite the usual excitement and preparations for Durga Puja, the festive spirit has been dampened by continuous protests on the streets. The protest movement, initiated after the doctor's tragic death, has now engulfed the entire state, with people demanding justice and stricter measures against such heinous crimes. Demonstrators are seen rallying even in the midst of puja shopping and celebrations, a first in the state's Durga Puja history.

In addition to public outrage, prominent figures from Tollywood, including actors closely associated with the ruling Trinamool Congress, have spoken out. Actor Dev made a bold statement to the media, expressing his fury over the incidents, saying, "Rapists should be shot dead. Such fear should be instilled in them so that no one dares to commit such crimes again."

As West Bengal prepares for its biggest cultural festival, the message from the people is clear: the festival belongs to everyone, and so does the protest. The sombre tone surrounding this year’s celebrations is a reflection of the widespread demand for justice and safety, as residents of the state navigate both their grief and their traditions.
