US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has embarked on a diplomatic mission to Saudi Arabia aimed at advancing ceasefire negotiations in Gaza and fostering normalization between Riyadh and Tel Aviv. Blinken's visit underscores ongoing efforts to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and promote stability in the region.

Arriving in Saudi Arabia on Monday, Blinken is set to engage in high-level discussions with senior Saudi leaders in Riyadh, as well as with foreign ministers from Qatar, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan. These talks will focus on bolstering efforts to secure a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, as well as exploring avenues for prisoner exchanges and preventing potential Israeli military operations in Rafah.

According to reports from the Times of Israel, Blinken is expected to travel to Israel later in the week to engage with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on enhancing humanitarian conditions in Gaza. Additionally, discussions will revolve around the reconstruction efforts in Gaza, with Blinken expected to coordinate with European and Arab counterparts on the path forward.

During a special session of the World Economic Forum in Riyadh, Blinken expressed optimism about nearing a deal to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia. He highlighted the close collaboration between the United States and Saudi Arabia in recent months, emphasizing bilateral defense and security commitments, including the sale of advanced weapons and civilian nuclear technology.

While in Saudi Arabia, Blinken may face pressure from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to expedite negotiations for a comprehensive agreement. The crown prince is expected to advocate for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state as a precondition for normalizing Saudi-Israeli relations. However, Netanyahu has staunchly opposed this condition, prioritizing resistance against Hamas.

Addressing concerns about potential Israeli military action in Rafah, Blinken emphasized the need for civilian protection. He underscored the importance of seeing a viable plan from Israel that ensures the safety of civilians in any offensive operation.

Despite shared objectives with Israel to neutralize Hamas, Blinken reiterated the US stance against Israeli occupation of Gaza. Instead, the United States advocates for multilateral support for the Palestinian Authority to govern Gaza, thereby promoting stability and security in the region.
