US National Security Adviser Jack Sullivan has outlined conditions for any future defense agreement with Saudi Arabia, stating that normalization of diplomatic relations with Israel must precede such an arrangement.
In an interview with the influential British daily 'Financial Times', Sullivan emphasized that any bilateral agreement between the US and Saudi Arabia must be contingent upon the normalization of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, alongside meaningful action on behalf of the Palestinian people.
Sullivan articulated, "The joint vision is that the bilateral agreement between the United States and Saudi Arabia is related to the normalization of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia and meaningful action on behalf of the Palestinian people. These things have to be done simultaneously and you cannot separate one from the other."
He further expressed optimism about the potential for creating a safer Israel and a more peaceful region, highlighting the importance of engaging multiple countries in the region to achieve this goal.
However, Sullivan acknowledged that the ultimate decision lies with the Israeli leadership, emphasizing the need for Israeli involvement in any proposed solution.
Addressing recent reports suggesting a defense deal between the US and Saudi Arabia, the US State Department refuted claims that such an agreement would proceed regardless of progress on normalization with Israel. This statement reinforces the US stance that diplomatic normalization with Israel remains a prerequisite for any significant bilateral agreements with Saudi Arabia.
As diplomatic efforts continue, Sullivan's remarks underscore the nuanced approach taken by the US administration towards fostering stability and peace in the Middle East.
