Bhairav, Dec 05 (V7N) — Chandan (35), the prime accused in the murder of Advocate Saiful Islam Alif in Chittagong, was arrested late Wednesday night at Bhairav railway station.

According to Bhairav Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shaheen Mia, Chandan was apprehended around 12:15 a.m. while attempting to reach his father-in-law’s house in the Bhairav Metharpatti area. He had been evading arrest since the murder on November 26.

Chandan, a resident of Sevak Colony on Chittagong Bundel Road, is accused No. 1 in the case filed by the victim's father, Jamal Uddin. He is currently in police custody and will soon be handed over to Chittagong Kotwali Police.

The police had been tracking Chandan for days. Using information technology, his location at Bhairav railway station was confirmed, and police stationed themselves at the site. OC Shaheen Mia said, "Chandan arrived by train around 7:30 p.m. and loitered at the station, intending to visit his in-laws under the cover of darkness. We arrested him before he could proceed."

The incident occurred on November 26 when followers of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a spokesperson for Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jot, staged protests after his arrest in Dhaka. The protests escalated into violence, during which Advocate Saiful Islam was killed on AC Dutta Road in Chittagong.

Following the murder, a case was filed against 31 named individuals and 10–15 unnamed persons. Earlier, nine suspects were arrested and presented before the court on December 2. These included Rumit Das, Sumit Das, Gagan Das, Nayan Das, Vishal Das, Aman Das, Moon Methor, Rajeev Bhattacharya, and Durlabh Das.

Chandan’s arrest marks a significant development in the investigation. Authorities are now working to ensure all individuals involved are brought to justice.
