Dhaka, Apr 08 (V7N) – Whether the traditional 'Mangal Shobhajatra' will retain its name this year will be decided by the Dhaka University authorities, said Cultural Advisor Mustafa Sarwar Farooqui.
He made this statement while addressing reporters after a meeting of the Law and Order Committee on Pahela Boishakh and Chaitra Sankranti, held at the Secretariat on Tuesday (April 8).
Farooqui clarified that no final decision has been taken yet regarding renaming or keeping the title of the iconic procession. “The Dhaka University authorities, who organize the event, will make the final call on April 10,” he said.
The Mangal Shobhajatra, organized annually by the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University, is a symbolic procession marking the Bengali New Year (Pahela Boishakh). It was recognized by UNESCO in 2016 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, celebrated for its inclusive spirit and resistance to oppression.
Farooqui reiterated the cultural significance of the event and emphasized that any decision regarding its name would be made thoughtfully and with consensus.
