Dhaka, Apr 09 (V7N) – Kihak Sang, Chairman of Yangwon Corporation from South Korea, has been granted Bangladeshi honorary citizenship for his exceptional contributions to the country’s ready-made garment (RMG) and textile sector.
The honorary citizenship was presented to Kihak Sang by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor to the interim government, during the Bangladesh Investment Summit-2025 held on Wednesday (April 9).
Kihak Sang has been instrumental in the development of Bangladesh’s RMG industry, having first arrived in Bangladesh in the 1990s. Over the years, his efforts have significantly helped shape the textile sector and contributed to the growth of Bangladesh's economy, particularly in the garment manufacturing sector.
According to Abul Kalam Azad Majumdar, Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Advisor, the idea to grant Kihak Sang honorary citizenship was first discussed a few weeks ago at the BOAO Forum in Hainan, China. The discussion was initiated by former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who asked Dr. Yunus if Bangladesh had any plans to honor Kihak Sang for his exceptional contribution to fostering business ties between Bangladesh and South Korea.
After this conversation, Dr. Yunus instructed officials to begin the process of granting Kihak Sang honorary citizenship.
Upon receiving the honorary citizenship at the summit, an emotional Kihak Sang expressed his gratitude, stating, "I feel truly honored to receive honorary citizenship." He added that he had always believed he would receive Bangladeshi citizenship one day, and it had come five years earlier than expected.
By receiving this prestigious honor, Kihak Sang joins the ranks of other distinguished individuals, including Kazi Nazrul Islam, Mohammad Ali, Father Marino Regan, and Gordon Greenidge—each of whom is considered a close and respected figure by the people of Bangladesh.
Kihak Sang’s honorary citizenship underscores the deep bond between Bangladesh and those who have made lasting contributions to the country’s economic and cultural landscape.
