Dhaka, Jan 08 (V7N) — The Law Ministry has prepared a draft ordinance to exempt participants of the July Uprising from legal liability, which will soon be presented to the Advisory Council for approval, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Advisor Dr. Asif Nazrul said.

In a post on his verified Facebook page, Dr. Nazrul stated that the fighters “risked their lives to free the country from fascist rule” and emphasized their right to legal immunity. He added that the draft ordinance seeks to provide protection for preventive actions carried out against those who attempted to assassinate Sheikh Hasina during the uprising.

Dr. Nazrul highlighted that similar immunity laws have been enacted in other countries following popular uprisings, including the Arab Spring, and pointed out that Article 46 of the Constitution of Bangladesh allows for such legislation. He also drew a parallel with the immunity granted to freedom fighters after Bangladesh’s liberation war in 1973.

He said, “In light of these precedents and laws, the Law Ministry has prepared a draft of the Immunization Ordinance, which God willing, will be presented for approval in the next Advisory Council meeting.”

Dr. Nazrul concluded by calling for the protection of the memory of the July fighters, saying it is “our sacred responsibility” to keep their legacy safe.
