Dhaka, Feb 24, (V7N) – A jewelry businessman, Anwar Hossain (43), was shot by robbers in the Banashree area of Rampura, Dhaka, on Sunday night. The assailants took nearly 200 bhori of gold jewelry and cash worth one lakh taka from Anwar.
The incident occurred around 10:30 PM in front of house number 20 on D Block 7th Road in Banashree. Nearby residents captured the robbery and shooting on mobile phones, and the video went viral on social media later that night.
The video shows three individuals on a motorcycle attempting to snatch the bag from Anwar. Despite resistance, one of the robbers shot him during the struggle. The robbers then managed to grab the bag and fled on the motorcycle.
Anwar’s family members stated that the bag contained 200 bhori of gold ornaments and one lakh taka. They suspect the robbers had followed Anwar from his shop before the attack.
Rampura Police Station’s Inspector (Investigation), Mashiul Alam, confirmed that Anwar was initially rushed to Faraji Hospital in Banashree and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment. Police recovered a bullet casing from the scene.
Anwar's friend, Majibur Rahman, informed the media that Anwar runs "Alankar Jewelers" on C Block 5th Road in Banashree. Anwar has been in the gold business for over 15 years. He resides with his family on D Block 7th Road, which is a short walk from his shop. On the night of the incident, Anwar was returning home with a bag containing gold ornaments and cash from his store when three motorcycles surrounded him near the entrance of his building. The assailants shot him and snatched the bag with the gold and money before fleeing.
Anwar was hit by four bullets and was also injured in at least six places with sharp weapons. He has been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
The police are continuing their investigation into the robbery and shooting.
