Dhaka, Jan 09 (V7N)— The trial of the BDR mutiny case has been relocated from the Bakshibazar temporary court to the Keraniganj Prison temporary court, according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs on Wednesday.
The notification stated that the trials of those accused in the 2009 BDR mutiny at the Peelkhana headquarters were previously conducted at a temporary court building near the Government Alia Madrasa and Dhaka Central Jail in the Bakshibazar area. However, damage to the court building during the student-public protests in July-August has rendered it unsuitable for further proceedings. Additionally, continued obstructions by students have created significant challenges.
The ministry also highlighted the logistical and security difficulties involved in transporting the accused from Keraniganj Central Jail to Bakshibazar for hearings. By moving the trial to the temporary court within Keraniganj Central Jail, these issues are expected to be resolved, ensuring both smoother proceedings and enhanced security.
The BDR mutiny case is one of the largest and most sensitive trials in Bangladesh’s history, involving numerous accused individuals and focusing on the tragic massacre of 74 people, including 57 army officers, during the 2009 mutiny. The relocation is expected to facilitate a more secure and efficient judicial process.
