Savar, Sep 13 (V7N) – Ferdous Al Hasan, an Assistant General Secretary (AGS) candidate of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) backed by Islami Chhatra Shibir, has alleged that a member of the Election Commission resigned in a bid to undermine the election process.
Speaking to reporters in front of the university’s old administrative building on Friday night, Ferdous said: “He has turned his back on the battlefield and fled. His resignation seems to us to be a sign that he quit after failing to implement the vile conspiracy he had surrounding the elections.”
The JUCSU elections were held on Thursday from 9 am to 5 pm across Hall 21 of Jahangirnagar University. Although the Election Commission had earlier announced that votes would be counted using OMR machines, the plan was scrapped following disputes between Chhatra Dal and Shibir over the supply of the devices. The ballots were instead counted manually.
Ballot boxes from various halls were transferred to the Senate building at around 7 pm, and counting began after 10 pm.
According to the Election Commission, there were 11,743 registered voters, of whom about 67–68% cast their ballots. As of 10:30 am Saturday, vote counting for the Central Parliament had been completed in 16 of 21 halls.
