On Thursday afternoon, the Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, departed the nation to do Umrah in Saudi Arabia.

At around 3:15 p.m., Fakhrul and his spouse Rahat Ara Begum departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka aboard a Biman Bangladesh Airlines aircraft, according to his personal aide M Yunus Ali, who spoke with a journalist.

He said that the BNP Secretary and his spouse will first travel to Medina to worship in the prophet's mosque and pay tribute to the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Pbuh).
They would thereafter travel from Madinah to Makkah to complete the sacred Umrah and worship at Masjid al-Haram.

On May 8, the BNP leader is expected to come home.
On October 29, one day after the police had prevented the BNP's large-scale gathering in Dhaka's Naya Paltan, Mirza Fakhrul was taken into custody. On February 15, he was freed on bond following almost three and a half months in custody.
Since entering prison, the BNP General Secretary has experienced a number of medical issues. Rahat Ara Begum, his spouse, is likewise ill.
On March 4, upon his release from prison, the pair travelled to Singapore for medical care.
