Habiganj, Oct 27 (V7N) — One person was killed and at least 30 others were injured when a passenger bus lost control and plunged into a roadside ditch on the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway in the Bezura area of Madhabpur upazila early on Sunday morning.
The deceased was identified as Badol Mia, 24, a resident of Bijoynagar upazila in Brahmanbaria district.
According to local sources, the bus was traveling from Sylhet to Dhaka carrying passengers returning home after visiting shrines in Sylhet. Around 6:00 a.m., the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and crash into a deep roadside ditch.
Upon receiving information, police from Shayestaganj Highway Police Station, Madhabpur Police Station, and members of the Fire Service rushed to the scene. They rescued the injured passengers and sent them to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Highway Police Sergeant Mosiur Rahman said that the body of the deceased had been taken away by family members before police arrived. “We ensured that all injured passengers were immediately transported to hospitals,” he added.
Local witnesses said the accident site turned chaotic after the crash as residents joined rescuers in helping victims trapped inside the damaged bus.
Police believe the accident may have occurred due to reckless driving or the driver’s loss of control on a slippery road caused by early morning fog. Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the crash.
Traffic movement on the busy Dhaka–Sylhet Highway was temporarily disrupted but was later restored after the wrecked bus was removed from the ditch.
