Dhaka, Jan 24 (V7N) – Police blocked a procession of primary school teachers heading toward the residence of Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, demanding the implementation of the 10th-grade salary scale for assistant teachers. The procession, which began at the Central Shaheed Minar, was stopped near Shahbagh Police Station at around 4 PM on Friday.
The teachers, chanting slogans in support of their demands, sat down on the road after being blocked. Earlier in the day, they had been holding a rally at the Central Shaheed Minar since 10 AM, with assistant teachers from various districts across the country gathering to demand fair pay.
Currently, assistant teachers are categorized under the 13th-grade salary scale, with a basic monthly salary of 11,000 taka. The teachers argue that this classification undermines their dignity and are calling for an upgrade to the 10th grade, which would raise their basic salary to 16,000 taka.
During the rally, the teachers expressed their frustration, stating, "Teachers are the craftsmen of the nation, and it is unacceptable to classify us as third-class employees."
They had issued an ultimatum, demanding that a representative from the interim government address their concerns by 2 PM. When their demands were not met, they marched toward the Chief Advisor's residence, only to be stopped by police barricades.
Despite the setback, the teachers vowed to continue their movement until their demands are met. They pledged unity and determination, reciting an oath at the Central Shaheed Minar to fight for their rightful recognition and respect.
This is the latest in a series of demonstrations highlighting the grievances of educators, as they push for fair treatment and acknowledgment of their vital role in shaping the nation's future.
