Dhaka, Mar 02 (V7N) - In a move to ensure affordable access to essential commodities for low-income groups, the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) will expand its truck-based sales initiative to all 64 districts starting Wednesday. The announcement was made by Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin during a virtual meeting with deputy commissioners (DCs) on Sunday.

The initiative, which is already operational in six districts, will now cover an additional 56 districts, bringing subsidized essential goods to more people across the country. The government aims to reach one crore marginalized individuals through this program, ensuring they have access to affordable daily necessities.

Bashir Uddin emphasized the importance of the DCs’ role in identifying and selecting eligible beneficiaries. He instructed them to complete the distribution of smart cards to all listed recipients by March 17. The smart cards will enable beneficiaries to purchase TCB goods at subsidized rates.

The virtual meeting also focused on the sale of TCB products through smart cards, a system designed to ensure transparency and efficiency in the distribution process. Bashir Uddin highlighted that 57 lakh beneficiaries, including those already listed but awaiting smart card issuance, would receive goods through this system.

The meeting was attended by Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman, Additional Secretary (Exports) Md Abdur Rahim Khan, TCB Chairman Brigadier General Mohammad Faisal Azad, and divisional and district commissioners from all 64 districts.

The expansion of TCB’s sales initiative comes amid rising prices of essential commodities, which have placed a heavy burden on low-income households. By making subsidized goods more accessible, the government aims to alleviate some of the financial pressures faced by vulnerable communities.

However, the success of the program will depend on the effective implementation of the smart card system and the accurate identification of beneficiaries. The DCs have been tasked with ensuring that the process is carried out fairly and efficiently.

The TCB’s truck-based sales initiative represents a significant step in the government’s efforts to support low-income groups. By expanding the program to all 64 districts, the government hopes to provide relief to millions of people struggling with the high cost of living.

As the initiative rolls out, close monitoring and coordination between TCB officials and local administrators will be crucial to ensure its success and maximize its impact.
