Dhaka, Mar 03 (V7N) – Abrar Fahad, a student from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), is being honored posthumously with the prestigious Swadhinata Padak-2025. This recognition comes in acknowledgment of his bravery and sacrifice following his tragic death in October 2019.
Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, Youth and Sports Advisor to the interim government, shared the news in a Facebook post on Monday, March 3, revealing that Abrar Fahad is receiving this honor for standing against injustice and being a beacon of free thought. Bhuiyan expressed that Abrar’s sacrifice represents a shining example of courage and justice, inspiring the nation to continue pursuing truth and fairness.
In the post, Bhuiyan wrote, "Abrar Fahad is a symbol of courage to stand against injustice, a reflection of free thinking. Being awarded the posthumous Swadhinata Padak 2025 is a recognition of his sacrifice. His ideals enlighten us and inspire us to move forward on the path of justice. The nation will not forget you, Abrar!"
Abrar Fahad's tragic story dates back to the night of October 7, 2019, when he was brutally beaten to death by a group of Chhatra League leaders and activists. Abrar, a second-year student at BUET, was killed after being accused of sharing critical posts about the government in a private Facebook group. His death sparked nationwide outrage and protests across the country, demanding justice.
On December 8, 2021, a court in Dhaka sentenced 20 BUET students to death for their involvement in the murder. The case remains a significant chapter in Bangladesh’s ongoing fight for justice and the protection of free speech, symbolizing the painful cost of standing up against injustice.
The posthumous award of the Swadhinata Padak-2025 to Abrar Fahad underscores the nation's deep respect for his ideals and commitment to justice, ensuring his memory and sacrifice will inspire future generations.
