Dhaka, Aug 16 (V7N) – The Hindu community across Bangladesh is celebrating Janmashtami today (Saturday), marking the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna with religious devotion, solemnity, and festive joy.

According to Hindu belief, Lord Krishna appeared on earth over 5,000 years ago, on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadra during the Dwapara Yuga. Born in the prison of Kansa, he came with the mission of protecting the righteous, defeating evildoers, and upholding truth and justice. For this, Lord Krishna is revered as a divine incarnation devoted to establishing peace and righteousness.

Tradition holds that whenever injustice and tyranny prevail, Lord Krishna descends to restore balance, safeguard religion, and protect the oppressed.

Today is a government holiday. Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar, and private TV channels are airing special programs, while newspapers are publishing feature articles to mark the occasion.

On the eve of Janmashtami, Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, extended greetings to the Hindu community. In his message, he emphasized the need for vigilance to preserve communal harmony, brotherhood, and social order. He said the interim government, formed through the historic mass uprising of students, workers, and the public, is determined to uphold this harmony.

Dr. Yunus highlighted Lord Krishna’s teachings of justice, humanity, and peace, saying these values remain vital for ensuring equality and harmony in society. “The ideals and teachings of Sri Krishna will further strengthen the bond of mutual harmony and brotherhood,” he said, calling for collective efforts to build a discrimination-free Bangladesh based on communal harmony.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Puja Celebration Council and the Metropolitan Universal Puja Committee announced that the historic central Janmashtami procession will be brought out today from Dhakeshwari National Temple at 3 pm. The chiefs of the three armed forces will attend the inauguration of the procession at Palashi intersection in the capital. Sri Krishna Puja will also be held tonight at Dhakeshwari temple.
