Dhaka, Feb 25 (V7N)- Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir has said that Bangladesh has not yet received any new official communication from the United States regarding the evolving tariff situation, but the government is closely monitoring developments.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Wednesday afternoon, the minister noted that the tariff arrangement involves multiple procedural steps and remains a developing issue. He said the recent court ruling related to the agreement has created a new context, adding that a non-disclosure agreement signed with the US makes the matter sensitive.
According to him, the earlier country-specific tariff rate stood at 19 percent, whereas the current structure sets a uniform 10 percent tariff for all countries.
Market Situation and Ramadan Prices
Addressing the domestic market, the minister said the government has been stabilizing prices by importing certain commodities, which has helped keep those markets under control. He cited lemons as an example, noting that prices surged at the beginning of Ramadan but fell within three days.
TCB Truck Incident
Referring to a recent incident involving a truck of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), he termed the matter “very unfortunate” and said authorities involved in distribution have been instructed to remain vigilant to prevent any recurrence.
Stand on Extortion
On the issue of extortion, the commerce minister said he would not make promises but would demonstrate action, indicating that enforcement measures would be taken where necessary.
