Sylhet, Apr 11 (V7N) – Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir has said that the influence of syndicates in the daily essentials market will be “completely” eliminated, as the government strengthens its intervention measures.
He made the remarks while inaugurating a farmers’ market in Sylhet, emphasizing that the role of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh will be further expanded to stabilize prices.
The minister said the government currently provides subsidies worth Tk 3,200–3,300 crore annually to ensure essential food items are available at affordable prices. While subsidies may be gradually reduced, TCB’s market intervention will increase through higher imports to maintain balance.
He stressed that the government is taking a strict stance against abnormal price hikes, market manipulation, and syndicate control, aiming to eliminate such practices during its tenure.
The minister also highlighted plans to modernize the country’s supply chain using advanced technology to improve efficiency and transparency.
Focusing on agricultural development, he said initiatives are underway to improve irrigation and drainage systems in Sylhet, including canal re-excavation projects. He added that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is expected to inaugurate the Basia Canal re-excavation program during a visit to Sylhet on May 2.
He expressed optimism that pilot projects undertaken by the Department of Agricultural Extension would boost crop production and could be implemented nationwide in phases if successful.
