DHAKA, April 12 (BSS) – Bangladesh has called on Iran to facilitate safe passage for Bangladesh-bound vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, as the Persian Gulf crisis continues to disrupt global shipping.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam made the request during a meeting with Iranian Ambassador Jalil Rahimi Jahanabadi at the foreign ministry. “The Hon’ble State Minister requested the Ambassador to consider facilitating the safe passage of Bangladesh-bound vessels through the Strait of Hormuz,” a foreign office statement said.
The two sides discussed bilateral issues and the evolving Middle East situation, stressing the importance of peace and stability. The state minister assured Dhaka’s full cooperation with the envoy in carrying out his duties.
Earlier this month, Ambassador Jahanabadi said Iran had approved safe passage for six Bangladesh-bound fuel ships waiting to cross Hormuz, amid dwindling petroleum reserves in the country. “Iran does not want Bangladeshis to face any hardships and will provide all necessary assistance for transporting fuel through Hormuz,” he told reporters.
International media reports indicate traffic through the strait remains at a near standstill, with only 5 to 11 vessels crossing daily compared to 100–130 in peacetime. Since the ceasefire between the US and Iran took effect, throughput has hovered around 7 to 11 vessels per day.
