Dhaka, May 19 (V7N) — Information Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has warned that the recent measles situation in the country highlights how negligence today can lead to larger public health crises in the future.
He made the remarks at a weekly briefing held at the Secretariat on Tuesday (May 19), adding that vaccines have already been rapidly procured to help control the outbreak and prevent further spread.
The minister also said that 91 individuals have submitted applications to the Ministry’s inquiry committee regarding alleged harassment cases involving journalists.
He stressed the need for a structured media policy to reduce disorder in the media sector, clarifying that such a policy should ensure order without restricting freedom. He further stated that a draft proposal to establish a media commission will be submitted to the Prime Minister by July.
At the same briefing, Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman commented on the ongoing Teesta Master Plan, saying it is primarily aimed at controlling floods and river erosion.
He added that the Prime Minister has instructed revisions to the plan, noting that it does not currently include provisions for large-scale water storage or utilization similar to projects like the Padma Barrage.
