Dhaka, Jun 07 (V7N) – The first budget session of the 13th National Parliament is set to begin today, marking the first financial session of the new parliament formed after the BNP came to power in the national elections held on February 12.

The session will begin at 3:00 pm on Sunday at the National Parliament Building. Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury is scheduled to present the proposed national budget for the fiscal year 2026–27 on June 11.

According to parliamentary sources, President Md. Shahabuddin convened the session on May 7 under Clause (1) of Article 72 of the Constitution.

The government is planning a budget of approximately Tk 938,000 crore for the upcoming fiscal year. Officials say rising expenditures linked to global economic risks, higher subsidy allocations, expanded social safety programs, increased interest payments, and partial implementation of a proposed new salary structure for government employees have significantly pushed up the budget size.

Despite priorities including economic recovery, inflation control, investment promotion, and employment generation, the government is facing the challenge of managing a projected budget deficit of around Tk 243,000 crore.

Authorities are targeting inflation to be brought down to 7.5 percent in the next fiscal year.

Parliamentary records show that the first session of the 13th National Parliament ended on April 30. During that session, 94 bills were passed over 25 working days.

The upcoming budget session is expected to be closely watched as it sets the fiscal direction for the new parliamentary term.
