Nilphamari, Aug 05 (V7N)- The water level of the Teesta River has started rising due to heavy rainfall and increased upstream flow, creating a risk of flooding in low-lying areas.
According to the Water Development Board, the river water was flowing 13 centimeters above the danger level at Dalia Point since Wednesday morning. This marks the seventh time the Teesta has crossed the danger level during the current monsoon season.
Officials said the water level began increasing from Tuesday night following continuous rainfall and upstream water pressure. As a result, several low-lying areas, including Purba Chatnai and Tepakharibari unions of Dimla Upazila, have been affected.
Local residents reported that houses and agricultural lands in the affected areas have started going underwater due to the rising river flow.
Meanwhile, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) said heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Rangpur, Sylhet, and Mymensingh divisions, along with adjoining upstream regions.
The center warned that short-term flooding may occur in some low-lying areas near riverbanks in these divisions due to increased rainfall and rising water levels. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have advised people living in vulnerable areas to remain alert.
