Dhaka, Sep 20 (V7N) – Authorities enforced Section 144 in Rangamati from 1:30 PM on Friday in response to deadly violence and arson attacks in Khagrachhari, as confirmed by Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Khan.

Three people were killed, and 15 others were injured in the unrest. The deceased have been identified as Dhananjay Chakma, Rubel Tripura, and 20-year-old Junan Chakma. All three died while receiving treatment at Adhunik Sadar Hospital.

The violence intensified on Thursday night, with heavy gunfire reported in various areas around 10:30 PM, instilling fear throughout the town. The shooting persisted late into the night.

Dhananjay Chakma lost his life during clashes in Dighinala on Thursday evening, while Rubel and Junan Chakma were transported to the hospital later that night with critical injuries from Khagrachhari.

Ripple Bappi Chakma, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) at Khagrachhari District Hospital, confirmed that 17 injured individuals were brought in, mostly from the town area. Despite medical efforts, three victims succumbed to their injuries. Autopsies will determine the exact cause of death, and nine others remain under treatment.

Four individuals were transferred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for better care, including one Bangali. The remaining injured belong to ethnic minority communities.

The violence followed the death of a Bangali man, Md Mamun, who was beaten to death by a mob on Wednesday after being accused of stealing a motorcycle in Khagrachhari.
