Dhaka, Sep 20 (V7N) – Three people lost their lives and nine others were injured in violent clashes in Khagrachhari on September 19. The victims, identified as Junan Chakma (20), Dhananjay Chakma (50), and Rubel (30), were confirmed dead by Ripple Bappi Chakma, the resident doctor at Khagrachhari District Sadar Hospital, where their bodies are currently being held.

According to local sources, intense gunfire erupted in the Narankhaiya area of Khagrachhari town around 10:30 PM, sparking widespread panic. However, details regarding the parties involved in the shooting remain unclear.

Later that night, 12 people were rushed to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital, where three succumbed to their injuries during treatment. Four seriously injured individuals have been transferred to Chattogram for further medical care, with some of the victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Among the deceased, Junan Chakma and Rubel were residents of Khagrachhari Sadar, while Dhananjay Chakma hailed from Dighinala.

Chittagong Medical College Hospital Director Brig Gen Md Taslim Uddin confirmed that three individuals had been transferred from Khagrachhari, two of whom had bullet wounds in their legs, while another had a gunshot wound in the shoulder.

Tensions in the region began to rise on Wednesday when Md Mamun was beaten to death in Khagrachhari on suspicion of theft. In response, Bengali students organized a protest rally the following day, during which provocative speeches were made, according to eyewitnesses.

The situation escalated into clashes between Bengalis and indigenous groups, with about 50 shops in Larma Square set on fire, injuring five people.

Later that night, gunfire was reported in the Narankhaiya area.

In light of these developments, law enforcement and army patrols have been increased throughout Khagrachhari to maintain order. Earlier, Deputy Commissioner Md Sahiduzzaman stated that the Army and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) had been deployed to stabilize the situation.
