Dhaka, Jan 17 (V7N)- Sarjis Alam, coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and General Secretary of the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation, has said that elections reflecting the public's true desires can only occur after implementing essential reforms.
He said that holding elections within six months as unrealistic and impossible.
Speaking on Friday afternoon at Moqbular Rahman Government College ground in his home district of Panchagarh, after distributing winter clothes among the destitute, he said that people's aspirations go beyond just one election.
He said that updating the voter list, reforming the Election Commission and judiciary, and restoring law enforcement agencies to their core responsibilities within such a short timeframe is nearly unfeasible.
Regarding the declaration of the uprising, Sarjis said: “Wherever we have gone, we have repeatedly emphasized that such a massive uprising deserves a written acknowledgment. Those who gave their blood and lives deserve recognition. With this in mind, the chief adviser invited representatives of all political parties. We believe a fruitful discussion has taken place, and we are confident that the declaration will soon be presented to the people.”
On participating in parliamentary elections, he said: “We have always worked based on the people's desires. All our programs were designed to understand the public pulse. Now, people want the young leaders who led the movement to represent them in parliament. If the people of Panchagarh believe that I or another young individual can represent them in parliament, I think it is our responsibility to take up that role.”
Sarjis Alam said that groups would be formed comprising people from every district and sub-district to prevent injustice and irregularities.
Sarjis Alam said: "We consider the opportunities given to us by the Creator as a trust. We will do everything possible for the welfare of people with this trust. Over the past 16 years, the Rangpur division, including Panchagarh, has faced significant disparities. Except for a few roads, no other development has taken place. Not even a single industrial factory has been established. We don't need much; we will make every effort to claim and achieve what rightfully belongs to the people of Panchagarh."
He further said: "There are many wealthy and kind-hearted individuals, including garment factory owners. All that's needed is communication and goodwill. The winter clothing we have received will be distributed across every union in Panchagarh in phases."
