Ukhiya, April 6 (V7N) - A five-member delegation, led by the Australian High Commissioner, visited the Rohingya camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar. The team toured the Women’s and Girls’ Safe Space and the Rohingya Cultural Memory Centre, both operated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The visit took place on Sunday, April 6, at 10:30 AM, when the delegation toured the 11th and 18th camps in the Maynarghona area of Ukhiya.
The delegation members included Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Mrs. Susan Rice; First Secretary of the Australian High Commission in Dhaka, Mr. Nick McClean; Third Secretary and Advisor to the Australian High Commissioner, Ms. Hamah Hossain; Senior Humanitarian Program Manager, Mrs. Banshree Sarkar; and Humanitarian Program Officer, Mr. Hasin Sadhab Bhuiyan.
According to Sub-Inspector Mohammad Ashikur Rahman of the 8th APBN, the delegation visited the camp’s registration center, where they met with attendees and learned about the operations of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) joint registration site located in Block G/2 of Camp 12. They also observed the data registration process for newly arrived refugees from Myanmar.
Later, the group visited the Women’s and Girls’ Safe Space and the Rohingya Cultural Memory Centre in Camp 18, Block E, operated by IOM. The delegation received a detailed briefing on the areas where Rohingyas previously resided in Myanmar, comparing them with the camp areas they now inhabit, through a map sketch.
The delegation concluded their visit and departed for Cox’s Bazar at 2:50 PM.
