DHAKA, April 12, (V7N) - The Dhaka University (DU) authorities have filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station after a Noboborsho Shobhajatra motif—bearing the face of Sheikh Hasina—was set on fire early Saturday morning at the Faculty of Fine Arts.
Shahbagh Police Station officer-in-charge Khalid Mansur confirmed the filing, stating that the case accuses unidentified individuals of the act. A general diary (GD) had been filed earlier in the day by the Fine Arts Faculty prior to the case registration.
CCTV footage shows a man entering the premises by jumping over a wall, dousing the motif with liquid, and setting it ablaze. He then fled the scene by heading toward Suhrawardy Udyan, said DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed.
The attack completely destroyed the motif representing what protesters called "fascist Sheikh Hasina" and partially damaged an adjacent sculpture known as the “Peace Dove.”
The university administration has since formed a five-member committee to investigate the incident and assist with identifying the suspect captured on video.
Authorities have intensified efforts to track the perpetrator and are reviewing additional footage and eyewitness accounts, while university officials have condemned the act as an attack on cultural and artistic expression.
