Aug 01(V7N) —The National Citizen Party (NCP) has suspended its central committee joint member secretary Gazi Salahuddin Tanvir for making objectionable remarks about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on social media.
The party announced a temporary suspension from his organisational duties and issued a show-cause notice to him on Friday night, just hours after his Facebook post triggered massive backlash.
Tanvir has been directed to submit a written explanation along with evidence to the party's central disciplinary committee within two working days of receiving the notice, stating why further action should not be taken against him.
In his now-deleted post, Tanvir had alleged that leaders of Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal were behind attacks and obstructions to NCP marches in three districts of the Sylhet division, including Habiganj. He also made objectionable comments about the Prime Minister in the same post. Although he removed the post a few hours later, screenshots had already gone viral.
In a letter published on NCP's verified Facebook page on Friday night, the party said the comment attributed to him was a "serious breach of organisational discipline and harmed the party's image on social media." The letter stated that on the instructions of convener Nahid Islam and member secretary Akhter Hossen, Tanvir was being immediately relieved of his responsibilities due to the seriousness of the issue.
This is the second time Tanvir has faced suspension. He was first removed in April 2025 over allegations of interfering in Deputy Commissioner appointments by entering the Secretariat after the July mass uprising, and of involvement in commission trading over textbook printing with the NCTB.
After staying out of the party for nearly a year, he was reinstated on April 16 this year. The fresh suspension comes just three and a half months after his return.
Following the controversy, Tanvir expressed regret for his remarks in a separate post on his personal Facebook account.
