Chattogram, Aug 22 (V7N) – A worker critically injured in an accident at Baraka Ship-breaking Yard in Sitalpur, Sitakunda, succumbed to his injuries today after eight days of treatment at a private hospital in Chattogram.

Md Alauddin (45), son of Md Nurul Islam and a resident of Kumira Union in Sitakunda upazila, died early this morning, according to Sitakunda Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahinul Islam.

According to locals, Alauddin was working at the ship-breaking yard in Shitalpur Chowdhury Ghata, Sonaichhari Union, around 8 am on August 16 when a heavy iron object accidentally fell from his hand, leaving him critically injured. Other workers quickly rescued him and admitted him to hospital in critical condition.

OC Mahinul Islam said, "A worker named Alauddin was injured about a week ago while working on an old ship named Baraka. He died early this morning."

The incident marks the latest in a series of workplace fatalities in Bangladesh's ship-breaking industry, which has long faced scrutiny over worker safety conditions. Police have recorded the death as an accidental case and are conducting further inquiries.
