Kushtia, Sept 22 (V7N) – A preparatory meeting was held here today to ensure the smooth and peaceful observance of the 136th death anniversary of Baul maestro Fakir Lalon Shah at Cheuriya in Kumarkhali upazila of the district.
The meeting was held at 10 am at the conference room of the deputy administration, with Deputy Commissioner Touhid Bin Hasan in the chair. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Mizanur Rahman conducted the meeting. The meeting discussed overall preparations for the Lalon death anniversary programme, law and order, security of visitors, facilities for devotees and followers, traffic movement and overall management of the venue.
Speaking at the meeting, DC Touhid Bin Hasan said Lalon Shah is not only a cultural icon of Kushtia but also an important part of the cultural heritage of Bengal and the Bengali people. "Devotees and visitors from different parts of the country and abroad come to Cheuriya to attend the death anniversary programme. Necessary preparations will be taken with due importance to ensure their security and hassle-free participation in the event," he said. He called upon all concerned departments to work in coordination to maintain discipline at the venue, ensure security and keep the movement of visitors smooth.
Former Kushtia-2 lawmaker and freedom fighter **Syed Mehedi Ahmed Rumi** said Lalon Shah's philosophy has spread messages of humanity and communal harmony among people at home and abroad. He urged local people, alongside the administration, to extend cooperation to ensure that the event at Cheuriya, associated with Lalon's memory, is held smoothly.
Kushtia district BNP convener Qutub Uddin Ahmed said Lalon Shah's philosophy and songs are deeply connected with the secular and humanitarian spirit of the Bengali people. He stressed the need for sincere efforts to ensure that the programme is held in a peaceful atmosphere and with due dignity.
The speakers said the Lalon death anniversary programme is one of the major cultural events in Kushtia. Considering the large number of visitors from home and abroad, they stressed ensuring security, information services, traffic management and a suitable environment for journalists to collect news at the venue.
Kushtia Police Superintendent Aminul Islam, Kushtia Journalists' Union (KUJ) President Abdur Razzaq Bachchu, former Press Club President Khandaker Al Mamun Sagar, former Press Club General Secretary Abu Moni Zubayed Ripon, Lalon researchers, journalists, cultural personalities, representatives of law enforcement agencies, government officials and local dignitaries attended the meeting.
Fakir Lalon Shah's 136th death anniversary will be observed on October 17, 2026. Lalon Shah, a prominent Baul saint, philosopher, and social reformer, is celebrated for his songs that transcend religious boundaries and advocate for humanity, tolerance, and the unity of all people.
