Dhaka, Oct 2 (V7N) – Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator M Abdus Salam today stressed the importance of cultural activities, sports and social engagement alongside formal education to help children grow into responsible and good citizens.
He made the remarks as chief guest at a children's entertainment programme jointly organized by the DSCC and cultural organization 'Amra Kuri' at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, marking World Children's Day 2026.
Salam said the future of the nation depends on its children, while families and society have a vital role to play in developing moral and humanitarian values among them. Although the country's education rate has increased significantly, he said, indiscipline and intolerance are also growing in society, making it necessary to address the issue seriously. "Alongside advances in science and technology, it is essential to develop humanitarian values among children," he said.
Urging guardians to remain vigilant about children's excessive use of technology, the DSCC administrator said mobile phones and other digital devices have many positive aspects, but excessive use can adversely affect children's physical and mental development.
He also highlighted the importance of creative and recreational activities such as dance, music, art and sports, saying these can contribute to children's healthy development and help keep them away from drugs and other harmful or illegal activities.
World Children's Day is observed on November 20 each year to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children's welfare. The DSCC and Amra Kuri organized the programme to provide children with an opportunity to engage in cultural activities and entertainment, reflecting the government's emphasis on holistic child development.
