Magura, Oct 2 (V7N) – Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury today urged the younger generation to remain united and vigilant against extremism, communalism and various forms of social degradation, saying healthy cultural practices are an effective tool to free society from the influence of harmful culture.
He made the remarks while inaugurating the first Community Police Kabaddi Championship-2026 at the historic Nomani Maidan in the district, according to a press release.
The Ministry of Cultural Affairs has taken joint initiatives with different ministries and institutions to attract youths to cultural activities, he said.
The minister said traditional rural sports and folk traditions, including kabaddi, dariabandha and boat races, which have been practised in Bengal for thousands of years, are integral parts of the country's culture. The Ministry of Cultural Affairs is working to make these traditional sports more popular and widespread, he added.
He also stressed the importance of showcasing traditional sports, including boat racing, which is closely associated with the lives and culture of the people of riverine Bangladesh, to the new generation.
The minister said police are not only friends of the people and protectors of their security, but also play a leading role in implementing various public welfare programmes of the government. Organising sports and cultural activities for police alongside community policing could play an important role in further strengthening close relations between the police and the people, he added. Nitai Roy thanked Bangladesh Police for organising such a timely and people-oriented event.
Lawmaker Advocate Newaz Halima Arly attended the event as the guest of honour, with Magura Superintendent of Police Molla Azad Hossain in the chair. Magura Deputy Commissioner Motakabbir Ahmed, Zilla Parishad Administrator and Magura District BNP Convener Ali Ahmed, and Magura Municipal BNP President Masud Hasan Khan Khizil attended the programme as special guests.
Earlier, the cultural affairs minister laid the foundation stone of Shaheed Minar at the historic Nomani Maidan.
