Dhaka, Nov 14 (V7N) - Nurul Haque Nur, president of Gono Odhikar Parishad, along with members of the Lawyer Rights Council, led a protest on Thursday urging the resignation of Mohammad Tajul Islam, the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal.

The demonstration, which took place on the High Court premises around 4:30 pm, featured statements from Lawyer Rights Council members questioning Tajul Islam's acceptance of government benefits while allegedly supporting the Tarek-Faruk faction of Gono Odhikar Parishad, which split from Nur's registered party. They criticized Tajul’s involvement in hearings on writ petitions against Nur's Gono Odhikar Parishad at the Election Commission, implying that his government affiliations made such actions improper.

Nur accused Tajul of leveraging his official role for personal gain by prompting former party members, who lack official positions, to submit writs targeting the credibility of Gono Odhikar Parishad. He contended that Tajul’s actions serve political objectives, thereby raising concerns about his impartiality.

Nur further questioned Tajul's ethics, emphasizing that the Chief Prosecutor should not oppose a constitutional body like the Election Commission. He expressed worries that Tajul’s alliances could impact tribunal outcomes, potentially eroding public trust in the judiciary and government.

Warning of future actions, Nur asserted that if Tajul is not removed, the Lawyer Rights Council, backed by lawyers, students, and citizens nationwide, will increase protests to demand his resignation.
