DHAKA, Apr 27 (V7N) - Tarique Rahman, the acting Chairman of the BNP and Chief Patron of 'Amra BNP Paribar', has expressed his solidarity with the grieving family of Lamia Akhter, who tragically committed suicide after being raped in Patuakhali.
Lamia Akhter was the daughter of Jasim Uddin, a 'martyr' of the 2024 July uprising who was fatally shot by police during the movement.
A delegation, led by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General and Chief Advisor of 'Amra BNP Paribar' Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed, visited Naldoani village in Dakshin Pangasia Union of Dumki Upazila, Patuakhali, this afternoon.
During the visit, Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi conveyed Tarique Rahman's message of sympathy to Lamia Akhter's family. He also provided financial assistance to Shaheed Jasim Uddin's elderly father, Sobhan Hawlader (Lamia Akhter's grandfather).
The delegation included Atiqur Rahman Rumon, convener of 'Amra BNP Paribar' and a member of the BNP Media Cell; Engineer Mostafa-e Zaman Selim, advisor of 'Amra BNP Paribar' and member secretary of Krishibid Mokchedul Momin Mithun; Zahidul Islam Rony, a permanent member of the Jatiya Press Club; and Md Amanullah Aman, the central organizing secretary of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
The delegation, led by Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, attended Lamia Akhter's Namaz-e-Janaza (funeral prayer) at the local school ground at 7:45 pm.
Following the prayer, the delegation visited the grave of her father, Jasim Uddin, who was also a 'martyr' of the July uprising.
The tragic incident unfolded on the evening of March 18th when Lamia Akhter was on her way to her grandmother's house in Pangasia Union after visiting her father's grave. She was reportedly gang-raped by several individuals. The perpetrators then allegedly took compromising photos of her and used them to intimidate her, threatening to share them on social media.
Unable to cope with the trauma and humiliation, Lamia Akhter was found hanging in her rented house on Road No. 6, Shekhertek, Dhaka, around 10:00 pm on April 26th. She was subsequently taken to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where the attending doctor pronounced her dead.
