Sunderland, Sep 13 (V7N)- Arsenal defeated Sunderland 2-0 at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, with David Raya saving a penalty before Bruno Guimarães and Bukayo Saka scored to secure another victory for Mikel Arteta’s side.
The result marked Arsenal’s sixth consecutive win across all competitions, although the scoreline did not fully reflect the difficulty of the contest, with Sunderland providing the Gunners with their toughest test of the season so far.
Both sides played cautiously in the opening half. Gabriel Magalhães sent a long-range effort narrowly wide, while Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs produced an excellent save to deny Kai Havertz. At the other end, Enzo Le Fée missed a close-range opportunity.
The match opened up after halftime when Sunderland were awarded a penalty following a physical challenge involving Arsenal defender Ezri Konsa and Dan Ballard during a corner.
Le Fée stepped up to take the spot-kick, but Raya read the direction perfectly and made an outstanding save to keep the score level.
Arsenal needed only two minutes to capitalize. Guimarães put the visitors ahead on the counter-attack, curling a superb effort from the edge of the box beyond Roefs.
Sunderland responded by committing more players forward in search of an equalizer. Roefs again impressed by denying Saka, while Ballard made a crucial goal-line clearance to prevent Arsenal from extending their lead.
Arsenal thought they had scored a second through Jurriën Timber, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Sunderland’s task became even more difficult late in the match when Reinildo was sent off after receiving a second yellow card while attempting to stop Saka.
Arsenal were awarded a penalty in stoppage time, and Saka calmly converted from the spot to seal a 2-0 victory.
With six wins from six matches, Arsenal have maintained their perfect start and strengthened their early position in the battle for silverware.
