Jerusalem, Jan 19 (V7N) — Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gavir has resigned from his position, citing dissatisfaction with the ceasefire agreement with Hamas. He formally submitted his resignation to the cabinet on Sunday.

Ben-Gavir, the leader of the far-right Jewish Power Party (JPP), announced that his party is also withdrawing from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition government. Several JPP ministers are expected to resign and submit their documents later in the day.

The decision follows Ben-Gavir's vocal opposition to the ceasefire, which he threatened to block in the Knesset earlier this week. However, his resignation is not expected to destabilise the Netanyahu government significantly.

The JPP holds only six seats in the 120-member Knesset. With their departure, the coalition’s majority will decrease from 68 to 62 seats, still maintaining a comfortable margin.

The resignation underscores ongoing tensions within the coalition over Israel's approach to its conflict with Hamas and broader security policies.
