Jerusalem, Feb 18 (V7N) — Israeli police have arrested an imam of Al-Aqsa Mosque, triggering renewed tension in the Old City, according to Palestinian reports.

The Palestinian news agency WAFA said Imam Sheikh Mohammed Al-Abbasi was detained from inside the mosque premises on Monday evening. Israeli police have not publicly specified the reason for the arrest.

The report noted that restrictions around the Al-Aqsa compound have recently intensified, with tighter controls on imams, preachers and worshippers, as well as limitations on entry. It also alleged an increase in visits by Israeli settlers under police protection.

The development comes just ahead of Ramadan, a period when tensions in Jerusalem often rise. Former Jerusalem Grand Mufti Sheikh Ekrima Sabri had earlier claimed that the administration of Benjamin Netanyahu was considering measures that could restrict Muslim access to the mosque during the holy month.

In a statement, Hamas said Al-Abbasi had been ordered barred from entering the mosque, describing the move as interference in the mosque’s internal affairs and a violation of religious freedom. The group also alleged that preparations at the site ahead of Ramadan were being obstructed.

The situation remains tense as authorities maintain heightened security measures in and around the Old City.
