Washington, Jul 11 (V7N) — U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that Iran would face overwhelming military retaliation if it attempts to assassinate him, escalating tensions amid ongoing diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Saturday, Trump claimed that if Iran attempted to assassinate or kill the current U.S. president, the United States would respond with an overwhelming missile strike.
He said the necessary orders had already been issued and asserted that the U.S. military was fully prepared to carry out a sustained military response against Iran if required.
In a separate post, Trump also claimed that Iran had sought to resume negotiations with the United States but said Washington had informed Tehran that the previous ceasefire arrangement was no longer in effect.
Iran rejected the claim, with Iranian state television stating that Tehran had not requested new talks with the United States.
However, Reuters reported that Qatari mediators met Iranian officials on Friday to discuss reducing regional tensions and the security situation in the Strait of Hormuz, indicating that diplomatic contacts remain active.
Meanwhile, several U.S. media outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, reported that Israel recently shared intelligence with Washington alleging that Iran had planned an assassination attempt against President Trump.
Separately, images from the funeral of Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei showed some mourners carrying banners bearing anti-Trump slogans, including calls for retaliation.
Khamenei was killed in an airstrike on February 28, during the opening day of the joint U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran. Since then, regional tensions have remained high, although diplomatic efforts to reach a lasting settlement continue.
