Florida, Dec 22, (V7N) - Tiger Woods and his son Charlie Woods are in a strong position to win the PNC Championship after carding a 13-under 59 on Saturday in the first round of the event at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Florida. The duo shares the first-round lead with the teams of Bernhard and Jason Langer, and Vijay and Qass Singh.

This is Tiger's first competitive appearance since the 2023 Open Championship in July. Despite multiple back surgeries, including his sixth procedure earlier this year, Tiger showed no signs of physical limitations and played a key role in the team’s success. He consistently made key shots, helping Charlie when he faced difficulty, and played a supporting role as a “great cheerleader.”

Charlie, a high school sophomore, displayed his talent with a series of impressive putts and long drives during the round. The pair recorded 13 birdies, including five consecutive birdies on the back nine. In the scramble format, where both players hit and then choose the best shot to continue, the Woods’ chemistry was evident, as they encouraged each other throughout.

The PNC Championship is an unofficial team event, and while Tiger’s victory wouldn’t add to his PGA Tour wins record, it would mark his first win anywhere since the Zozo Championship in 2019, which was his 82nd PGA Tour title. The Woods duo has participated in the PNC Championship every year since 2020 but have yet to win.

“Being able to have these experiences with Charlie and walk inside the ropes with him is so special,” Tiger said. “Normally, we’re competing against each other, but this week it’s all about rooting for each other and pulling for each other’s shots.”

Looking ahead to Sunday, Tiger said they would need another strong round to secure the win, with multiple teams in contention. Charlie echoed the sentiment, saying the key to success was having fun and trusting the game.

The duo will be aiming to capture their first PNC Championship victory after close calls in previous years.
