MELBOURNE, Dec 22,(V7N) – Teenage sensation Sam Konstas is eager to take on India’s formidable pace attack after earning his maiden call-up to Australia’s Test squad for the Boxing Day showdown at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The 19-year-old is expected to open the batting alongside veteran Usman Khawaja, 38, following the axing of Nathan McSweeney, who struggled in his first three Tests.
Speaking to Fox Sports after a tough outing for the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League, where he was dismissed for a duck, Konstas expressed confidence.
"I'm very excited. I want to be challenged, and I've got a few plans against India's bowlers," said Konstas. "I feel like I'm moving really nicely, so hopefully I get that opportunity."
India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has wreaked havoc on Australia’s top order during the series, which is currently tied 1-1. While McSweeney was dropped for his lack of impact, Khawaja is also under pressure to deliver.
Despite this, Konstas believes he is well-prepared to face Bumrah and the rest of India's bowling unit.
If included in the playing XI, Konstas would become Australia’s youngest Test debutant since current skipper Pat Cummins, who made his debut at 18 against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2011.
The young opener's selection comes after a string of remarkable performances, including becoming the youngest player since Ricky Ponting to score two centuries in the same Sheffield Shield match. He also scored a century against India while playing for the Prime Minister’s XI.
Konstas recalled the moment he was informed of his selection by chief selector George Bailey.
"I was so thrilled and called my parents straight away, and they were very emotional," he said. "Mum was in tears, so I was trying not to cry. Dad was super proud. It's been an amazing journey with all the ups and downs."
While Konstas is a strong contender, Australia has other options in Josh Inglis and all-rounder Beau Webster, both included in the squad.
The final decision on the XI for the Boxing Day Test will likely be influenced by conditions at the MCG and the team’s strategy to counter India’s aggressive bowling attack.
Konstas’ debut could mark the beginning of a promising career as he looks to emulate the featsof young Australian cricketing greats.
