DHAKA, Dec 28, (V7N)– Former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza's participation in the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) T20 tournament is in doubt as concerns over his fitness persist.
Mashrafe, who last played for the national team in 2020, has continued participating in domestic cricket despite ongoing fitness issues. In recent BPL seasons, he has primarily played as a batter rather than a bowler, reflecting his physical limitations.
Sylhet Strikers, the team he captained last season, drafted him once again for this year’s tournament. However, with only two days left before the BPL begins, Sylhet head coach Mahmud Emon expressed uncertainty about Mashrafe’s availability.
"Mashrafe is still in our squad because he is an integral part of this team," Emon said during a press briefing. "It depends on the situation—how he feels and what his fitness status is. If he is fit to play or if the situation is favorable, he will definitely play."
The franchise has indicated that Mashrafe might take on a different role if he decides not to play as a cricketer, though no details about this potential role have been disclosed.
Coach Emon further explained, "Until he is fit to play, we think we will not consider Mashrafe. We will wait for him. If he signals readiness to play, we will assess the timeline. Otherwise, we will replace him with another player."
The team has also not yet decided on its captain for the upcoming season. Emon said an announcement would be made soon.
Sylhet Strikers have been actively preparing for the tournament. Emon reported that all local players, except Mashrafe, attended practice on Saturday. Two overseas players have already joined the team, with two more checking into the hotel and others en route.
Mashrafe’s uncertain fitness status raises questions about his future in the BPL. While he remains a key figure for the Sylhet Strikers, his participation will ultimately depend on his physical readiness and the team’s requirements as the tournament unfolds.
