SYDNEY, Jan 2, (V7N) - Out-of-form all-rounder Mitch Marsh has been omitted from Australia’s squad for the decisive fifth Test against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground, with Beau Webster set to make his Test debut on Friday.
Despite carrying a rib injury, Mitchell Starc retains his place, forming a pace attack with captain Pat Cummins and Scott Boland, supported by spinner Nathan Lyon.
Marsh, 33, has struggled to make an impact in the ongoing series with both bat and ball, prompting his removal from the playing XI. Captain Pat Cummins acknowledged Marsh's contributions but emphasized the need for change:
"Mitchy hasn't quite got the runs or wickets he would have liked this series and felt like it was time for a freshen up. It’s a tough call, but it’s also a chance to reward Beau for his consistency."
Marsh, who debuted in 2014, has had an inconsistent Test career and may now focus on limited-overs formats, where he remains a pivotal figure for Australia.
Beau Webster’s Opportunity
Webster, 31, has been a consistent performer in Sheffield Shield cricket and is known for his versatility with both bat and ball. Capable of bowling pace and off-spin, Webster adds depth to the Australian attack, especially as a backup in case Starc’s injury worsens.
Webster will be the third debutant of the series, following teenage opener Sam Konstas and Nathan McSweeney. Konstas made an immediate impact in Melbourne with an audacious 60, which included a remarkable ramp shot for six off Jasprit Bumrah.
Mitchell Starc’s Resilience
Despite showing signs of discomfort during the Melbourne Test, Starc has been cleared to play, reaffirming his commitment to the team:
"He was never going to miss this one," said Cummins.
Australia leads the series 2-1 and is on the verge of reclaiming the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time since 2014-15. A win or a draw in Sydney will seal the series and secure Australia’s place in the World Test Championship final at Lord’s in June, where they would face South Africa.
