Pierceson Coody shot a five-under-par 67 on Friday to maintain a two-shot lead in the US PGA Tour ISCO Championship in Nicholasville, Kentucky, on a day filled with low scores.
Starting with a three-shot lead after an impressive 61 on Thursday, Coody recorded six birdies and one bogey in his round at Keene Trace Golf Club, bringing his total to 16-under 128. He leads Belgian Matthis Besard, US veteran Chez Reavie, and Rico Hoey of the Philippines by two strokes.
Several early starters reached the clubhouse at 13-under before Coody began his round. Starting on the 10th hole, he reclaimed the solo lead with a 21-foot birdie putt on the 17th. However, he bogeyed the next hole after a wayward tee shot resulted in a lost ball. Coody recovered with birdies on the fifth, seventh, and eighth holes to regain his lead.
Reflecting on his round, Coody said, "It wasn't quite 61, but 67's still a really nice score," emphasizing the importance of minimizing damage at the 18th hole. "It's huge knowing that the scores are low, knowing that I needed to go get three, four, five birdies on the back nine to kind of get myself in the position I want to be -- out in front in the golf tournament."
Besard, who has been playing on the DP World Tour this season, had nine birdies in his nine-under 63 round. He started with back-to-back birdies, highlighting his 32-foot birdie putt on the second hole as the standout moment.
Reavie, starting on the 10th hole, made six birdies in seven holes, including five consecutive birdies from the 15th. He finished his round with birdies on the sixth and seventh holes and a five-foot eagle putt on the 18th to join Besard and Hoey on 14-under 130.
Hoey carded a bogey-free 66 to stay in contention. Reavie, in his 17th season on tour and a three-time winner, last won in 2022. He remarked on playing alongside the younger players, "I love playing with young guys. It feels like it keeps me young a little bit."
Half a dozen players are one stroke behind the leading group on 131, with another four players at 132. The halfway cutline of eight-under is a record low relative to par in an individual stroke-play event on the PGA Tour, surpassing the previous record of seven-under set at the 2020 Shriners Children's Open.
