Kabul, Sept 1 (V7N) – A powerful earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale struck eastern Afghanistan near the border with Pakistan, killing more than 20 people and injuring over 115 others. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue efforts continue in remote and mountainous areas.
According to local officials speaking to the BBC, the worst-affected regions are Nangarhar and Kunar provinces, where dozens of homes and buildings have reportedly collapsed or sustained severe damage. Many of the injured have been transported to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.
The earthquake struck at a shallow depth, increasing its impact across a wide area. Emergency response teams, including military units and local volunteers, have been deployed to search for survivors under the rubble.
Afghanistan, located along a major seismic fault line, is prone to frequent earthquakes, particularly in its mountainous eastern and northeastern regions. Poor infrastructure and limited access to emergency services make such natural disasters especially deadly in the region.
