Kyiv, Oct 31 (V7N) — Russia carried out extensive missile and drone strikes targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on Wednesday night, killing at least two people and injuring 17 others, including a two-year-old child. The attacks caused significant damage to the country’s electricity supply system, according to Ukrainian authorities.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the attacks targeted civilian sites and energy facilities across nine regions and the capital Kyiv. He called on the United States, European nations, and G7 countries to impose stricter sanctions on Russia.

Ukraine’s largest private electricity company, DTEK, reported damage to multiple power plants. CEO Maksym Tymchenko stated, “This is a major blow to our efforts to maintain electricity supply during the upcoming winter.” In the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, Governor Ivan Fedorov confirmed two deaths and 17 injuries as a result of the strikes. Following the attacks, emergency power cuts were implemented in most affected areas.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed it shot down 170 Ukrainian drones on the same day.

In northeastern Ukraine, residents around the city of Kupiansk have expressed fear over a potential second Russian attempt to seize the city, which had been previously occupied in 2022 before being liberated by Ukrainian forces.

Separately, following a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Busan, South Korea, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the United States and China will work together to end the war in Ukraine. However, he noted that Russian oil imports were not discussed during the talks, according to Moscow Times and AFP reports.
