Dhaka, Oct 31 (V7N) — The government has officially announced the formation of a six-member search committee tasked with recommending candidates for the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other Election Commissioners to the President. The committee, formed by the Cabinet Department on Thursday, has a mandate to submit its recommendations within 15 working days.
The committee will be chaired by Senior Appellate Division Judge Zubair Rahman Chowdhury, who will lead the team in fulfilling the responsibilities outlined by the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Appointment Act, 2022.
The other committee members include:
Justice AKM Asaduzzaman, Senior High Court Judge,
Professor Jinnatun Nesha Tahmida Begum, former Chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC),
Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar, former Professor of International Relations at Dhaka University,
Nurul Islam, Auditor General and Controller of Bangladesh (ex officio member),
Mobaswer Monem, Chairman of the PSC.
The search committee is required by law to propose two candidates for each vacant position, ensuring that the final selection of the CEC and Election Commissioners will be made by the President. Meetings of the committee require a quorum of three members to proceed.
The Cabinet Division will be responsible for providing the necessary administrative support for the committee’s operations.
