Dhaka, Feb 20  (V7N) – Renowned educationist, writer, and translator Professor Niaz Zaman has been awarded the Ekushey Padak, one of the highest civilian honors in Bangladesh, for his outstanding contributions to the field of education.

The award was presented by Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus at a ceremony held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka on Thursday (February 20).

A Distinguished Career in Education

Professor Niaz Zaman has had a long and illustrious career in education, spanning over five decades.

He completed his master’s degree in English literature from Dhaka University in 1963.

Later, he pursued a second master's degree from American University in Washington, DC, USA.

In 1987, he earned a PhD from George Washington University.

His teaching journey began at Viqarunnisa Noon School and Holy Cross College before he moved on to Chittagong University. In 1972, he joined the English Department at Dhaka University, where he served until his retirement in 2013. Since 2006, he has been working as an advisor to the Department of English and Modern Languages at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB).

A Prolific Writer and Translator

Beyond education, Professor Zaman has made significant contributions to literature, translation, and research.

Author of:

  • Three novels
  • Three short story collections
  • Seven children's books

Notable works include:

A Divided Legacy: The Partition in Selected Novels of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh

Winner of the National Archives Award and Atwar Hussain Award

The Art of Kantha Embroidery and Textiles from Bengal: A Shared Legacy

Celebrated for their in-depth study of Bangladesh’s textile industry.

Translation Contributions:

  • Translated Kazi Nazrul Islam’s Badhon Hara into English.
  • Edited collections such as 1971 and After: Selected Stories and The Dimness: Best Bangladeshi Stories 1971-2021.

Previous Honors and Recognitions

  • Throughout his career, Professor Zaman has received several prestigious awards, including:
