Dhaka, Feb 23 (V7N) – Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Home Affairs Advisor to the interim government, assured that the law and order situation will improve from Monday. He made this statement during an emergency press conference at his residence in Baridhara DOHS, Dhaka, around 3 AM on Sunday.

Wave of Robberies Sparks Protests

His comments come amid growing public concern over recent robberies and criminal incidents in the capital. On Sunday night, a jewellery merchant in Banasree was attacked and robbed of 200 bhari of gold ornaments and lakhs of taka in cash. Additionally, another gold snatching incident occurred in Mohammadpur.

Following these incidents, students took to the streets, holding a late-night protest rally at Dhaka University. They demanded the resignation of the Home Affairs Advisor by Monday afternoon, holding him responsible for the deteriorating law and order situation.

Government Blames Political Opponents

During his press briefing, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury alleged that Awami League supporters were trying to destabilize the country by using illicit funds from abroad. He warned that the government will take all necessary steps to prevent further chaos.

Increased Police Patrols and Warning to Law Enforcement

The Home Affairs Advisor informed that law enforcement agencies have been directed to intensify patrols across the country. He assured that from Monday onwards, efforts would be made to prevent criminal activities. He also warned that if law enforcement agencies fail to implement these measures, disciplinary actions will be taken against them.

On Calls for Resignation

Addressing the student protesters’ demand for his resignation, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury dismissed it outright, stating:
"If I can fulfill my responsibilities, there is no question of resigning."

With heightened security measures set to begin, it remains to be seen whether the government can regain control over the situation and restore public confidence.
