Dhaka, Apr 11 (V7N) – The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has denied allegations of abduction involving model and actress Meghna Alam, stating that the accusations of her being forcibly taken after a door was broken are not true.
In a post shared on the DMP's verified Facebook page on Friday, the police clarified that Meghna Alam was taken into protective custody after being accused of several offenses, including disrupting state security, spreading misinformation about important individuals, and allegedly conspiring to financially harm the country. The police also assured that all legal procedures were followed during her detention.
The DMP’s post further emphasized that the allegations of abduction are false, but Meghna Alam retains the right to seek legal recourse if she wishes.
Meghna Alam was arrested on the evening of Wednesday, April 9, from a residence in the Bashundhara area of Dhaka. Before her arrest, she went live on Facebook, where she claimed that individuals wearing police badges were attempting to enter her home by “breaking the door.” Her live stream, which lasted over 12 minutes, was abruptly ended and later deleted.
Following her arrest, Meghna was presented in court the following Thursday night. The court ordered her to be detained for 30 days under the Special Powers Act of 1974. This detention was made in the interest of maintaining law and order and preventing activities detrimental to public safety. Meghna was subsequently sent to Kashimpur Jail.
The Special Powers Act allows for the detention of individuals without a formal court trial for a specified period. The law is typically invoked in cases involving threats to public safety or state security.
Meghna Alam, who gained fame as the winner of the 'Miss Earth Bangladesh' competition in October 2020, is known for her advocacy around environmental issues. The competition aimed to promote self-reliance among women by creating products from discarded plastic to protect the environment.
As of now, Meghna Alam’s case is continuing, and legal proceedings are underway.
