Dhaka, Apr 20 (V7N)- China has pledged to provide $138.2 million in assistance to boost the development of Bangladesh's healthcare sector, Health Advisor Nurjahan Begum announced on Sunday. She made the remarks while inaugurating the Yunnan Education and Health Exhibition at the Senate Building of Dhaka University.

As part of this collaboration, China has agreed to establish a specialized hospital for paralysed patients in Dhamrai, Dhaka, said the advisor. Discussions are also ongoing for the construction of a 1,000-bed hospital, aiming to improve medical infrastructure and expand healthcare access for the population.

Nurjahan Begum highlighted Bangladesh’s strong health cooperation with China, recalling that during the COVID-19 pandemic, Bangladesh procured the largest number of vaccines from China, which played a crucial role in managing the crisis.

Speaking at the event, Chinese Ambassador to Dhaka Yao Wen emphasized the strength of Bangladesh-China relations. He noted that the recent visit of Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus to China had been “very successful”, further enhancing bilateral cooperation.

“In the near future, Bangladeshi citizens will be able to travel to China for medical treatment with ease,” the ambassador added, signaling a potential opening of Chinese healthcare services to Bangladeshi patients.

The announcement comes as part of China’s broader engagement in Bangladesh’s development, particularly in the areas of healthcare, infrastructure, and education.
